Jesse Rogers was born in southern Rusk County February 11, 1913. He lost his sight during childhood but later achieved local fame and appreciation as the Broom Man of Henderson.
At age 10 Rogers began attending at the Texas School for the Blind and Deaf in Austin where he learned to make brooms. The school also taught music, domestic skills, and other trades such as chair caning.
While still attending the school Rogers bought his own broom making equipment and sold brooms to local clients. He moved to Henderson in 1940, married in 1941, and bought a house in 1945.
Many people sought Rogers’ high quality brooms. He continued making them from his home in Henderson for many years and he is still remembered by many in the community.
Rogers traveled to California for guide dog training and returned with a dog named Nero he kept eight and a half years. Rogers developed diabetes in 1965 and a heart condition in 1969.
After Rogers’ death his equipment was donated to the Depot Museum where it is on display year-round. Artisans at Henderson’s Heritage Syrup Festival demonstrate many traditional crafts — including broom making.
