Wood County Airport announced last week a major expansion of its runway, extending the existing runway from 4,000 feet to 5,006 feet. This expansion marks a significant milestone in Wood County’s ongoing commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure and meeting the growing needs of its county and region.
“The decision to extend the runway was driven by several factors, including the increasing demand for air travel, the need to accommodate larger aircraft, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of operations at Wood County Airport,” said Christine Thomas, Executive Director of Wood County Economic Development Council. “The extended runway will facilitate smoother takeoffs and landings, reduce congestion, and enhance overall airport capacity.”
In 2023, Wood County secured a historic transportation investment from the State of Texas, amounting to $8 million with a 10 percent match from local sponsors, facilitated by state representatives and local leadership. This innovative funding approach, known as the Hybrid Path, allows local sponsors to manage design as reimbursable, with TxDOT acting as the agent for construction. Garver Engineering was selected by local sponsors to oversee the expansion.
The key features of the Runway Expansion are:
Increased Length: Extending the runway to 5006 feet provides ample space for a broader range of aircraft operations.
Enhanced Safety: The longer runway improves safety margins, facilitating better braking distances and emergency procedures.
Capacity for Larger Aircraft: With increased length, Wood County Airport can now accommodate larger aircraft, attracting a more diverse range of commercial and private aviation traffic.
Improved Operational Efficiency: Pilots will benefit from enhanced operational flexibility, particularly during adverse weather conditions or peak travel periods.
As for the impact on the community, the expansion “underscores Wood County Airport’s role as a crucial transportation hub, supporting economic growth, tourism, and regional connectivity,” Thomas said. “These enhancements will attract new businesses, create job opportunities, and strengthen the local economy.”
Thomas is also excited about the growth of the airport and its potential to create more jobs.
“The expansion of the Wood County Airport will create opportunities for aviation education and training for the county.”
At the same time, constrictions will begin with consideration for the environmental impact.
“Wood County Airport remains committed to environmental stewardship throughout the expansion project,” Thomas said. “Comprehensive environmental impact assessments were conducted to minimize disruption to local ecosystems and uphold sustainable development practices.”
Construction is set to commence on the project in July 2024, with completion expected by Spring 2025. Throughout the construction phase, the airport will prioritize minimal disruption to airport operations and maintain transparent communication with stakeholders.
Wood County Airport, strategically located between Mineola and Quitman on County Road 2355, serves as a vital gateway for both commercial and private aviation in the region. It facilitates travel, business, and recreational activities, offering amenities such as a 24-hour fueling station, overnight space, maintenance hangar, a courtesy car, and an airport terminal open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
