Retired management consultant turned cattle rancher in Ben Wheeler, Texas, George P. Berg has written a book about his time in Vietnam. Grunt 0311: Reflections of a Marine Rifleman covers when he served in the US Marine Corps as an infantry rifleman and fire team leader. The book was produced from an earlier version called Letters Home: Reflections of a Marine Rifleman, which won a 2024 Gold Award in the Biography/Autobiography/Memoir — General/Historical category from the Colorado Independent Publisher’s Association.

As a lance corporal, Berg was deployed southwest of Da Nang and participated in Operation Allen Brook out of Go Noi and in multiple unnamed oeprations. He completed many company-sized combat sweeps and led fire teams in small unit ambushes. He also acted as “shotgun” for rough-rider convoy escorts.

Berg was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy-Marine Corps combat action ribbon, and the national defense service ribbon among other medals.
